How many of us have dreamed of being in a Hollywood blockbuster? Ever fantasized about being in an action film and everything around you seems to blow up, but you walk away with not a single scratch? Maybe you dreamed of being in a romantic film where someone engages in a fight to the death for your love. It has been a common dream amongst many of us, but Marquez Cohn has decided to do what some are afraid of…He’s taking a chance.
Marquez, the 26 year old single father from Decatur, Alabama, has always had big dreams. He’s always visioned himself on some sort of stage, whether it be acting or singing, but his pursuit of fame and fortune has not clouded his vision of who he is when he looks in the mirror. He describes growing up in Alabama as a cool place to live. Stating that it gave him a true sense of values and humility that will carry him forever. Raised by his grandparents, they manage to instill a deep understanding of life through God’s word.

“They did the best they could for me and my little brother. We never went without. Even to this day” -Marquez Cohn

In 2009, he began acting in a place that he felt would be the perfect starting point, Atlanta, Ga. Acting has always been something that he was interested in exploring. Later, he decided that the next step in his progression would be to take his talents to the West Coast. This is where he felt he could better network and build his acting resume.

“I moved to California to pursue acting, but on the journey, I’ve since discovered and gained a new confidence as an artist (singer), which has always been my number one passion since a very young age. I’ve gained a very big network of support and resources out here in Cali, which I’m planning to put into full motion by the end of 2013.” -Marquez Cohn

He is currently working on a five to six song album (EP), which he plans to release later this year, and is working on putting together a show. At the end of the year, he hopes to have a few more commercials under his belt, and maybe, be featured in some more films. Which he feels is where all the fun will start. Within the next five years, his vision for himself is to be an established artist. He loves to perform. He believes that is where his heart has been since the age of five. Marquez even states that he would give up acting to pursue a career in singing. With Michael Jackson and Usher listed as big influences in his life, he knew that dancing, singing, and acting would lead him to what he considers his home…the stage.

“Music is like the first love that you try to let go, but in your mind, you know she’s [music] going to end up being your wife. It’s just one of those things. Only God knows where I will end up at the end of the day, but I’m enjoying the journey. There has been nothing but progression through Him, so the sky is definitely not the limit.” -Marquez Cohn

The motivation behind Marquez comes from a multitude of sources. He believes that it comes from our heavenly father, his family, and all the people in the world that need to be inspired to pursue their passion or simply need a little strength to keep pushing forward. He hopes to be a great role model and example for the youth.

“I strive to be a positive influence for people, so that they can go and influence more people. I live to inspire.” -Marquez Cohn

When asked what was his most discouraging moment as an aspiring actor, Marquez had this to say,

“I was once in a restaurant in Studio City, CA, and I was being served by a young black actor that was featured in a big blockbuster movie years ago. It was sad that even after being in the limelight in such a smash hit, that he did not get much work after that. That goes to show how much harder it is for people of color to make it out here. It was a harsh reality check, that’s all.” -Marquez Cohn

He gave us his best advice to people who wish to pursue a career in acting. He stated that acting takes alot of studying and commitment. He prepares for scenes by doing character breakdowns, research about the character he’s building, and then memorizes lines, which can all be pretty time consuming. He develops back-stories for whatever character he’s asked to play, so that the character has more life and passion behind him. He also states that you should make the first step and let God carry you the rest of the way. He encourages all to stay positive and to remove all negative people or things from your life and watch your blessings multiply.
As we exited our interview with young Marquez, he left us with a few shout-outs:

“I would like to thank God, my grandparents Ira & Eddie for raising me with passion, and my son for being my motivation and getting me through the toughest times with his smile.” -Marquez Cohn

It is hard to say what makes a man. We all have our own opinion on that subject, but what is it that all of our opinions have in common? Is it age? Is it character? More importantly, what makes a “GOOD” man?
According to the justice system, you are a man depending on your age. If you commit a crime, you are a man based on the seriousness of the charges brought against you and your previous criminal record. The legal age to be charged as an adult can start as low as 10 years of age (in Kansas and Vermont), but the most common age is 14 (16 states) according to PBS.org. Most teens believe that you are a man at the age of 18 (the age that your parents have probably been looking forward to since your birth), but at what age does maturity set in? The term maturity can be defined as the state at which you are fully developed in mind and body. I seriously doubt that you are completely developed at the age of 10 or 14, but when you try to act like a man, eventually, someone will try you as if you are one.
As stated before, we all have our different opinions as to what makes a man. The answers may vary depending on each person and gender, so our best bet is to gather information from all, and draw a final conclusion. Based on my own observations, most people feel that you are a man when you become independent, accountable, and responsible. When you are independent, you are able to take care of yourself without calling forth others to help you handle your life and choices. When you are accountable, you are able to acknowledge mistakes made on your part without pointing your finger at someone else. Accountability and responsibilty go hand-in-hand. They are bonded. You cannot be one without the other. When you are responsible, you know what takes priority in your life, and you are accountable for those responsibilities. These three characteristics are key factors in the making of a man.
This next question is one that NEEDS to be asked when it comes to the subject of men: What makes a good man? Once again, the answer to this question varies with each individual. The most common answer is a man who takes care of his responsibilities (i.e. family, bills, and everything within his possesion). That isn’t all that defines a man, though. Character plays a major role. How a man treats those who aren’t able to do anything for him shows his character. If he has two dollars, does he give away a percentage of it to those with none? Does he treat his woman with the respect she deserves for being his woman? Would he open the door for a lady following close behind him, for whom he doesn’t know? You cannot judge a man based on material things that he owns. Hypothetically speaking, if he owns ten vehicles, does he maintain the upkeep of each one, or does he replace the vehicles when there is maintenance to be done? You can tell alot about a man based on the things he places value on.

Throughout my short years on this Earth, I’ve encountered many women in search of the “Perfect Man”. Television and romantic novels have morphed the reality of what a perfect man is. The fantasies of women play a major role in it, too. We, as men, cannot blame our women for that. Men, as well, fantasize about the “Perfect Woman”. The reality of both is far off from what we fantasize. We’re not always even tempered. We stress. At times, we’re tired, worn out, and spread thin. We may not always have the funds available for romantic getaways. The point that I am trying to make is that, when it comes to human beings, we are not perfect without our flaws.
As a young male, I, too, am still growing as a man. I am in no shape or form, the ideal candidate for the “Good-Man-Presidency.” I am still learning. What we have to realize is that learning how to be a man is a trial-and-error process. Much like our female counterparts. Our women have the concept of a perfect man in their minds, because they were raised to have high standards for someone that they intend to elope with. Can we blame them for their teachings?
As men, we often relate our manhood to the amount of success we’ve achieved. A successful man, more often than none, is a happy man. It feeds into our egos. It, too, plays a part in who we are. Success breeds confidence, in most cases. It is our assurance that we can accomplish almost anything with the right mindset. Therefore, a man without a taste of success, is a man without a piece of himself.
In conclusion, there are a multitude of necessary characteristics that are involved in the makings of a man, other than his age. A sense of responsibility, accountability, and independence form the outline of a good man. Owning material items may satisfy us for awhile, but overall, they mean nothing in the development of our character. As we continue to go through this life-long learning process, we will continue to grow and build confidence in ourselves, which will allow us to become great, successful men. Keep learning, my friends.

What classifies as artwork? Is it paint on what was once an all white canvas? Would graffiti on a stone wall be described as it? Who is to say what can and cannot be described as a masterpiece. I feel that there are many Picaso’s in this world who may not use the same kind of paintbrush as Pablo. Jessica Renee’, a twenty-five year old college graduate from Atlanta, Ga, has found her paintbrush…which also happens to be a curling iron. The passion within Jessica started long ago as a little girl. The blood of a hair stylist runs through her veins as did her grandmother, her aunt, and her uncle. She always knew in her heart that she wanted to be a hair stylist. The creative designs that spew from her heart is fueled by an endless amount of sources that she draws her inspiration from. Literally studying pictures in her downtime, she looks for ways to to tweak the designs of other stylists and add her own southern flavor to take it to the next level. She constantly asks herself, “What can I do that will set me apart?” In an industry where change is common, she tries to stay on top of what is the next trend.

Graduating from Dekalb Technical College, Jessica earned her cosmetology license and intends to take the knowledge that she has gained beyond the state lines of Georgia. In the next 5 years, she plans for her company, Amp’d Up, to be more successful than it ever was. She intends to hire other passionate stylists and make-up artists for gigs nationwide, and possibly, overseas. She made a note of the fact that doing make-up is something that she fell into. She drew and painted alot when she was younger, so she feels that doing make-up just came natural to her.

“I have a good amount of clients that travel a good distance just to get their hair done. I also have people that ask if I could come to their town, so my goal for the year is to become a traveling stylist.” – Jessica Renee’

For those who get a little irritated waiting in the hair salons and barbershops, she understands that your time is precious. She understands that within twenty-four hours in a day, there is alot that may need to be done. It is not her intention to have you waiting for extensive periods of time. Not only is she talented, but she’s also considerate.

“I can be meticulous with my art, but I try not to take long. Everyone’s time, including mine, is valuable.” -Jessica Renee’

When asked what celebrity’s hair would she love to work on, she replied “Monica.” Monica, who happens to be a grammy award-winning singer/songwriter/record producer/actress, was born in Atlanta, Ga. Taking notice of Monica’s fearless attempts at new hair styles, it increases Jessica’s interest in working with her.

“I love that she is always trying new styles. Whether it be long or short. Funky or sultry. That tells me that she’d probably be open to just let me “do me”, and as an artist, that’s when I work best.”

It is not easy being a hair stylist in high demand, but the thought of quiting cosmetology has never crossed Jessica Renee’s mind. For alot of stylist who are just starting out, it can be difficult to build a steady clientele and, at times, it can be very discouraging. No one rolls out of bed and becomes rich and famous from putting in absolutely no work. It took time, blood, sweat, and tears for Jessica to get to where she is now. She gives her credit to her faith in God.

“I never thought about giving up cosmetology, but I have let others influence me into taking jobs that temporarily took me away from the cosmetology field…and I HATED IT! One thing I realized is that God gives you the vision He has set for you. Everyone won’t be able to see it. You just have to trust Him. Even when it doesn’t look like the way to go.”

Can the church say, “Amen”?

Would you agree that hip-hop has definitely changed since the days of Rakim, Public Enemy, EPMD, Eazy-E, Doug E. Fresh, Snoop Doggie Dogg (before the rasta phase), and Biggie Smalls? At one point, hip-hop was a way to get young people together to have a great time. It was also a way to get the word out about events that were taking place in our communities. I’m not saying that hip-hop has taken a turn for the worse, but do you think that today’s music reflects what the originators of it were thinking when it first came into existence?
There are many benefits to being in the hip-hop industry. Many artists pursue a career in music

because they feel that they were born with music in their hearts and it would slowly eat away at their soul if they did not get it out. Also, there are artist that pursue a career in music for the financial stability. We all have seen the lavish lifestyles that are promoted on TV in music videos. It has become a way to better the living situations of many that come from, literally, nothing. Which, when an artist shares his story, may sound familiar to many of our own stories? It has become the living proof that we, too, can become one of those artists that we see on TV through determination and resilience.

Then, there are those who enter the profession for the fame. To have the opportunity to walk red carpet events with big named celebrities and to have the type of connection that will open doors to almost any venue. Who is to say that any of these reasons are wrong?
Now, the question is, what are we willing to risk for that financial stability? For the fame? For the connections? Are we willing to risk everything we love and own for a shot at the spotlight? Our relationships? Our families? These are the type of decisions that many artists face every day and it’s hard to say whether the risks outweigh the rewards. Only the artist himself/herself can really say.
Now that we’ve brought the risks and rewards to the forefront, it’s time to talk about the most important part of the industry; the music. If you were to become an artist, what type of music would you create? Would it be something with depth and substance? Would you create the type of music that reaches out and touches the soul of your listeners? Would you be the type of artist that can fill an entire arena with head-bobbing, “turnt up”, fans that wouldn’t be able to stay in their seats throughout the entire set?
Regardless of whatever type of artist you choose to be, there will always the be question: What do you stand for? That, in my opinion, plays a major role in whether your career will have longevity or not. There’s more that plays into the artist other than just a hot instrumental. You have to have that “X-Factor.” That one thing that will make a fan latch onto, not just your music, but your life. There are millions of artist in the world that release countless numbers of tracks, but you have to be “special” in order for the “Average Joe” to cling onto you. Do your fans relate to your music? Do they FEEL your music? Does it speak to them? Outside of all of that, what do you bring to the table that says, “HEY! LOOK AT ME! I’M NOT LIKE THE OTHERS!”. The music industry is based solely on numbers (if you were to ask anyone at a major record label). Therefore, the music industry can be a cold game.
In conclusion, we all love music. It’s what gets us through the day. It can calm us down when we’re angry. It can mend our broken hearts. It can prepare us for a night on the town. It can even make us stop in the middle of what we’re doing and relate the lyrics to what is going on in our lives. My advice to anyone thinking of joining the hip-hop culture is to be yourself, know what you stand for, review the risks and rewards, and remember that anything is possible with persistence.

Lamar Womic, known to many as DuWurk, was born on September 12, 1989. Born with a hustler’s mentality, he’s managed to find ways of making money through a well thought out plan. Navigating his way around the networking scene for awhile now, his potential seems far from limited. Working his way through the underground hip-hop tunnels, he’s managed to work with a plethora of unsigned artists in the Charlotte, North Carolina area, such as Pete Rose and Weirdo. Other artists on his list of work references consist of Carlos Cartel from Charleston, South Carolina, Dubble A out of Augusta, Georgia, K Camp, Mykko Montana and many more. Teaming with Tiger Eye Management Group as an Artist Relations & Marketing Representative, DuWurk sets out to continue the grind he has started long ago. Though the road has been long traveled, DuWurk’s passion for the business will not allow him to rest until the entire roster of artists under the Tiger Eye Management brand reaches their full potential.
DuWurk has started his own venture, as well. Brand DuWurk consists of hosting and promoting mixtapes, club promotions, event planning, songwriting, and clothing design. Drawing attention from many of his peers and affiliates, the Brand DuWurk movement has branched out beyond limitless horizons. With numerous projects in the works for this year, including music, clothing design, club ventures, and more, there is no question to why he is referred to as “The One Man Street-Team. “
DuWurk, well on his way to becoming one of the top event planners and promoters in the area (promoting events with headliners Future, Gucci Mane, Kirko Bangz, Rick Ross, Rocko, and Yo Gotti), the question to be asked is, “DO YOU WURK?”

“The meaning behind the name, DuWurk, is simple. It means non-stop, hard work. It is motivation. Overcoming adversities, setbacks, and downfalls. It means that you never give up or give in when the word “No” shows up to your doorstep. My motivation is everything around me. My environment, my past, my future…everything motivates me. I can be driving around a big city and the view of the skyscrapers will motivate me. I wanted to be in the shoes of the people in THAT building.”

-Lamar “DuWurk” Womic

With the first half of the year gone, DuWurk prepares for his summer grind. With more artists in his lineup, this should be one of his most successful years. As long as he continues with the same hard work and dedication that has taken him to where he is now, the skies are endless for this young man.
